Sure, we have used pepper, vanilla and other spices before landing on Zanzibar. But it was only by witnessing their cultivation first hand that we could fully appreciate what a labour of love they are. The arduous process of cultivating vanilla, the queen of spices, touched us the most, given the royal treatment and even pollinated by hand with true patience and precision.
